아담 펜들턴은 흑인 정체성을 자신만의 방식으로 표현하는 작가이다. 28세에 페이스갤러리와 전속 계약을 한 아담 팬들턴은 1970년대 이후 가장 젊은 페이스갤러리 전속 작가이다. 미국 뉴욕에 거주하며 활동하는 작가는 흑인성과 추상, 아방가르드가 연계된 '블랙 다다(Black Dada)'작업으로 알려져 있다. 끊임없이 팽창하는 언어와 이미지의 아카이브를 이용해 만든 그의 독창적인 회화, 콜라주, 영상, 설치 작품을 제작하고 있다.

 

'I AM NOT THE', 'BUT NOW I AM', BUT NOW WE' 등 비슷하면서도 다른 언어 조합과 강렬한인상을 주는 역사적인 사진이나 고대 아프리카 가면과 조각상 이미지들을 확인할 수 있다.

 

작가는 "미학적, 문화적, 미술사적 시각에서 재료와 소통하고자 한"며 "아프리카 가면 등을 통해 역사에 대한 궁금증을 작품에 풀어내다양한 요소를 교합시킴으로써 현대와 역사를 엮어내고자 했다"고 설명했다. 

 

"오브제 그 자체는 저에게 완결된 것이 아닙니다. 오브제는 시작점일 뿐입니다. 

약속와 참여의 장소로서 오브제를 보는 개념은 제가 작업을 하면서 항상 되돌아오게 되는 개념입니다.

저는 중간계 장소(a mid-space locataion)를 찾는데 관심이 있어요. 그것이 아마도 혁명의 시작일 겁니다."

 

Pace Gallery is pleased to present Adam Pendleton: These Elements of Me, the artist’s first solo show in Korea and his sixth with Pace. The exhibition comprises a single large-scale work: a 46-panel grid of compositions silkscreened with black ink on clear sheets of Mylar. Derived from Pendleton’s collages, the titular work is part of an ongoing series that incorporates the artist’s own writings and drawings as well as found materials, such as historical photographs and pages from books in his personal library.

 

In These Elements of Me, a play of repetitive, incomplete, and unresolved propositions—“I AM NOT THE”…“BUT NOW I AM”…“BUT NOW WE”…“THE NOW I AM”…“BUT WAS THE”—unfolds in uncanny dialogue with shapes, marks, hatching, and reproduced images. These visual forms intrude into the compositional space of the words, at times disrupting their legibility. Masks and sculptural figures from African cultures feature prominently in the series, alluding to the relationships between Modernism, abstraction, and colonialism. Rereading and overwriting, masking and remasking, Pendleton allows opacities to accumulate and proliferate, refiguring the transparent lightness of the Mylar support while disrupting any overarching sense of semiotic clarity.

 

"For me, the object itself is not finite or complete. It’s really a point of departure. It’s this idea I always come back to, which is about viewing the object as a site of engagement. I’m interested in finding a mid-space location, which is maybe how revolutions start."
